Ukraine is an Eastern European country that also has a proud football history. This East Slavic nation was once part of the defunct communist country called the USSR and usually provided the majority of the national football team's players. Many good teams came from the country, some of which performed well on the European continent. However, today we will highlight just five of the best teams in Ukraine. 1. Dynamo Kyiv
Without a doubt, Dynamo is probably the most popular, successful and well-known football club in Ukraine. Kiev was founded on May 13, 1927 by the Ukrainian branch of the Soviet government with a focus on sports and physical fitness. The club is the most successful team in the country and has won the Ukrainian Premier League a record 16 times. They have also won the Ukrainian Cup 13 times in their history. In the former football competitions organized by the Soviet Union, they won the league 13 times and the cup nine times.
Dinamo also won the European Continental Cup twice, in the 1974/75 and 1985/86 seasons, that is, the former Cup Winners' Cup, now the Europa League. The club became famous for being involved in an alleged “death match” in which its players were said to have been killed for defeating a select German team representing the Nazi regime. The current Dynamo Kyiv team is coached by one of football's most successful coaches, Mircea Lucescu.
2. Shakhtar Donetsk
The Miners are the second biggest team in Ukraine. Shakhtar was founded on May 24, 1936 by the Soviet Sports and Cultural Council. The name was derived from a Ukrainian miner named Aleksei Stakhanov.
Donetsk has won the Ukrainian championship 13 times and has also won the cup a record 13 times. They won the former Soviet league once and the cup four times. In Europe, he won the old UEFA Cup (Europa League) in the 2008/09 season. They also frequently participate in the UEFA Champions League. Shakhtar is the club with the most fans in Ukraine.
3. FC Chernomorets-Odessa
The Sailors were founded 85 years ago, on March 26, 1936, in the Ukrainian city of Odessa. The modest club has had limited success over the years, but has won the Ukrainian Cup twice in its history and finished second in the league twice. In the extinct Soviet competitions, it only managed to win the League Cup once, in 1990.
4. FC Vorskla Poltava
The Green-Whites were founded in 1955 by republican trade unions in the city of Poltava. Vorskla only have one major domestic cup to their name, the Ukrainian Cup, which they won in the 2008-09 season.
5. SC Tavriya Simferopol
The Tatars were founded in 1958. They are the only other club, alongside Dynamo and Shakhtar, to win the Ukrainian Premier League, achieved in 1992. Due to the political consequences of the invasion of the Crimea region of Ukraine, the club's remnants had to be merged with other clubs. The current version of the club plays its football in the second Ukrainian league.
