Many football players have worn the number 2 shirt. It is one of football's signature numbers. This number is generally associated with defensive players, especially right backs. Over the years, several football players have distinguished themselves by wearing this special number. Here are some of the famous football players who have worn the number 2 jersey.
1.Gary Neville
Neville is a retired English right-back who wore the number 2 shirt during his time at Manchester United from 1994 to 2011.
Gary was an integral part of the Red Devil's all-conquering teams from the mid-1990s to the 2000s. He won a large number of titles including 8 Premier League titles, 3 FA Cups, 2 League Cups and 2 UEFA trophies Champions League, to name a few.
2. Coffee
Marcos Evangelista de Morais, better known as Cafu, retired Brazilian right-back, wore the number 2 shirt for the different clubs he played for throughout his career. The 2002 World Cup winner wore the number during his time in Italy, playing for AS Roma (1997-2003) and AC Milan (2003-2008). In addition to the World Cup, Cafu also won the UEFA Champions League and the FIFA Club World Cup.
The Brazilian full-back wore number 2 during his first successful spell at Spanish giants FC Barcelona between 2009 and 2013. The exciting full-back was part of an extremely talented Milan team that won domestic and continental club competitions.
3.Lee Dixon
The former Arsenal FC right-back is one of the players to wear the number 2 shirt for the longest time in the Gunners' history. Dixon held the number 2 between 1987 and 2002. He was part of Arsenal's famously frugal defense which also included Steve Bould, Tony Adams and Nigel Winterburn. Lee had a very successful spell in north London, winning four league titles, three FA Cups and a European Cup Winners' Cup in the 1993/94 season.
4. Lilian Thuram
Thuram is a former French international. The 1998 World Cup winner was a talented right-back known for his defensive abilities and occasional attacking attempts. Lilian wore the number 2 shirt for France from 1994 to 2008.
5. Ivan Cordoba
Córdoba is a former Colombian international who played for Italian team Inter Milan. The defender played over 300 league matches for the Nerazzurri, wearing the number 2 shirt between 2000 and 2012. During his time at the San Siro, Ivan won five Serie A titles A, four Italian Cups and a UEFA Champions League trophy.
6.Daniel Alves
Dani Alves, arguably one of the best right-backs in the history of football, wore the number 2 shirt for Barcelona from 2009 to 2013. The Brazilian is also the most decorated football player in history.
7. Rafael Varane
Raphael Varane was instrumental in Real Madrid winning back-to-back UCL trophies. He did this when he wore the number 2 shirt for Los Blancos.
8. Branislav Ivanovic
The former Serbia international wore the number 2 shirt when he played for Premier League side Chelsea FC between 2007/08 and 2016/17.
9. Hector Bellerin
The Spaniard is another right-back who has frequently worn the number 2 shirt. During his time at Arsenal, he wore the number from the 2018/19 to 2024/22 seasons.
10. Glen Johnson
Glen Johnson is one of the best English right-backs of all time. For most of his career, Johnson wore the number 2 shirt. He wore number 2 when playing for Liverpool, Chelsea and the England national team.
