Those were difficult seasons for Monaco, who flirted with relegation and went through a succession of managers. They finished ninth last season under Roberto Moreno, but he was sacked last month and now Niko Kovac will have the opportunity to coach the squad.

Kovac won the league with Bayern Munich and that gave the French team confidence to give him a 3-year contract. Monaco have not been as active in the transfer market, although it is interesting that they have signed Axel Disasi from Reims, the team playing at the weekend. Disasi has been great for Reims last season so it's a huge blow for Monaco.

The fact that the league in France ended suddenly meant that Reims finished one place in the Europa League. They will have to play a qualifying match, but if they win, the famous French club will take part in European football again.

Some eyebrows were taken aback when Reims paid Lazio €5 million for Valon Berisha, the midfielder. Pre-season at Reims was mixed. At home they lost 4-0 to Bordeaux, but won against Troyes. They lost 3 of their 9 games.
